The English golfer Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed exceptional nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, defeating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff after a topsy-turvy final round of competition.
Rai sank a decisive birdie from around eight feet to seal the victory, echoing his only previous tournament triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a playoff victory over Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Drama
The champion started the last day with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that featured seven birdies and two bogeys.
Fleetwood moved a stroke clear with two holes remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the final green.
Playoff Climax
This led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to take the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better individual. To compete alongside him the last two days was really special,” stated Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and maintaining focus, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”
Other Contenders
The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to make up, finishing a stroke short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 final round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of topping the standings were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent final-round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
